(292 words) In the story of A. Chekhov "Longing" the image of St. Petersburg is clearly revealed. This city is large, crowded, but stale. In it, no one cares about the longing of the cab driver Jonah, whose son died in the week.
The action takes place in St. Petersburg - a cold northern city, which is traditionally portrayed by gloomy colors and sharp strokes. The lights in it are pale, the horse is white and motionless, the porches are dark. So Chekhov immerses the reader in an atmosphere of hopelessness and cold, which does not come from winter, but from people, buildings, lifeless bustle of the vast capital. The main character sits on the gantries motionless, bending under the weight of grief and a thick layer of snow, which did not see the point of shaking off. He is waiting for riders to talk to them on the way and earn a little living and oats for a horse. A man wants to speak out, to lighten his chest, which is torn by longing. However, the riders do not want to listen to him and only scold for the fact that he is riding badly. One even gives a back slap. It’s hard for Jonah to keep track of the road, because his thoughts are far from her. He recalls his son, who was a good cab driver, and says that death was wrong and took the wrong one. At the end of the working day, the man enters the stable and pours out the soul of the horse there. Despite the fact that "crowds" were running around him all day, he did not find sympathy in any person. This colorless city of cold and snow depersonalizes its inhabitants, turning their hearts into ice.
There is a paradox in the story of A. Chekhov "Tosca": the hero feels lonely among people. Only the animal has time to listen. What are the townspeople so busy with? They live in order to "go to the oats", it is obvious that everyday affairs do not leave them the strength for anything else. This means that the living conditions in the capital require them to give themselves completely in the name of material, philistine goals, and the spiritual aspects of life, meanwhile, are dying out. And the cold, dull look of the city only underscores this.
