Each character of the play “At the Bottom” is an indicator of the state of a certain layer of society in tsarist Russia, therefore, to understand the book, it is very important to know the history of each character.
- Mikhail Ivanov Kostylev. 54 years old, landlord keeper. The husband of Vasilisa Karpovna. Mercantilen. The past is unknown. Sadist, bloodsucker. He suspected that his wife was cheating on him. He adhered to authoritarian views on human rights - "it’s impossible for people like cockroaches to live ... A person must define himself in the right place." Was killed by Vaska Ashes.
- Vasilisa Karpovna. 28 years. Kostyleva’s wife, Natasha’s sister, Vaska Pepla’s former lover. Hates her husband - he beat her. Luke compared her to an adder. Beaten sister.
- Natasha 20 years. Sister Vasilisa, mistress of Ashes. Kostylev beat her. Often quarreled with her sister. Rejects the courtship of Ashes. It disappeared without a trace after the death of Kostylev.
- Medvedev. 50 years. Policeman. Uncle Natasha and Vasilisa. The Boyfriend Suitor. Hot-tempered. Not at the bottom.
- Vaska Ashes. Thief, son of a thief. Sells stolen goods from Kostylev. His parent spent his whole life in prison, leaving him a family “craft” by inheritance. Former Vasilisa’s lover, Natasha’s boyfriend, ready to sacrifice her lifestyle for her. Interested in religion. Poorly tolerates the appearance of the dead. His story ends when he goes to jail for the (inadvertent) killing of Kostylev.
- “Tick”, Andrei Mitrich. 40 years. Locksmith, an alcoholic. Anna's husband. He beat his wife, although he loved her. He drank his fortune and tools. Materialist and workaholic, tried to rise from the "bottom" honest work. Denies another's ideology. Ended up the poor.
- Anna. 30 years. Tick Wife. In the past, she lived a hungry, hard life. The husband beat her. For a moment she wanted to recover, but succumbed to the eloquence of Luke and surrendered. Waiting for death as deliverance. Died of a fatal lung disease at the end of Act 2.
- Luke. 60 years. Wanderer leading a vagabond lifestyle. He professes peculiar religious views: "What you believe is what it is." He is interested in personalities and stories of lodgers. He adheres to the idea of lying for the good, trying to alleviate the suffering of others with a false hope: "It is not the word that matters, but why the word is spoken?" It disappears between the 3-4 acts, probably having gone to the Ukrainians, becoming interested in their faith.
- Nastya. 24 years. An ordinary girl, keen on romantic stories. Emotional. Empathizes with Luke, adhering to his point of view regarding lies. He works as a prostitute, has a relationship with the Baron.
- Sauer. Trading dumplings. Sympathizes with Medvedev. She was married to an unloved person, adheres to feminist views. Her story ends unsaid, she remains in good health.
- Bubnov. 45 years old, warthog, furrier. I used to have my own institution. Does not know how to lie, does not understand the lie. Always sincere, therefore pessimistic. Ends life in poverty.
- Baron. 33 years. Former aristocrat, now bankrupt. He lived his whole life meaninglessly, as if in a fog. He does not understand the causes of lies, but is prone to it.
- Satin He used to perform on stage and dance. He was a telegrapher. Became a card player. Quack, an alcoholic, unemployed. He was in prison for the murder of a scoundrel who insulted his sister. A very witty and reasonable person who opposes lies that offend human dignity with pity.
- Actor. 40 years old, alcoholic, neurotic. On stage, his name is Sverchkov Zavolzhsky. Drowning in debt. I chose to believe Luke's story about the free hospital-organisms-poisoned-alcohol and was about to leave in search of her. He committed suicide by hanging himself.
