(345 words) In A. Ostrovsky’s play “Thunderstorm”, the problem of a pipe dream is acute. All the characters dream of something, but most of them are left with nothing, because reality makes adjustments to their plans. So, Katerina dreamed of love and freedom of the bird, and Tikhon - of a quiet family life with her beloved wife. These dreams seem simple and quite achievable, but in the final they came across a wall of reality. Why did this happen?
Firstly, the spouses' dreams are far from the same thing. If the wife dreams of flying and romance, then the husband is nailed to the philistine idea of happiness - mundane, domestic, philistine. The exalted dreams of Katerina Tikhon not understand. Therefore, the husband and wife strive for different ideals, and this desire itself destroys the Kabanov family. But as long as the relationship between the spouses exists, they can’t achieve the realization of their dreams, because everyone dreams of their own, therefore, discord in the family has become a necessary condition for the realization of what is desired.
Secondly, the world in which the heroes live is intolerant of dreamy natures. People in it are governed not by desire, but by public opinion, which feeds on prejudice. Kabanikh sees only fornication in dreams, and each member of the family is labeled in the form of a kind of moral duty, which deprives a person of the right to dream. In her view, people are created for decency, and their holy duty is to live in accordance with the only true patriarchal principles. Marfa Kabanova expresses the whole public opinion of Kalinov in the play, because she is the mistress of local life and the trendsetter. She also prevents children from realizing their dreams, all the oppression of her hypocrisy falls upon them.
Thirdly, the heroes themselves could not achieve the embodiment of their dreams. Tikhon was cowardly and dependent on his mother, he easily reconciled with unbearable domestic oppression, fleeing to the inn whenever possible. Katerina, too, could not oppose Kabanikha, her rebellion ended in a crushing defeat, although she tried to realize her dream.
Thus, the fact that Katerina and Tikhon could not realize their dreams, they themselves and their environment are to blame. These people initially should not have been married, as their life aspirations and views were different. In addition, the environment into which they entered by adopting its laws strangled any desire that went beyond the narrow framework of hypocritical morality.
